2/22/99 St. Augustine Changes Hands
John Huffman, owner of Hickory Motor Speedway in North Carolina and also Montgomery Motor Speedway in Alabama has taken over the St. Augustine Speedway half mile facility in northern Florida.
One of the founding member tracks of the NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division, Hickory Motor Speedway has been the site for many historic short track battles. The site of one of the longest-running weekly tracks in NASCAR has helped spawn many great driving careers over the years, earning it the nickname "The Birthplace of NASCAR Stars." St. Augustine, "the newest race track in the nation's oldest city", has named Michael McConnell better known as "NASCAR Mike" as the Track manager. McConnell has been an employee of the track as a track steward for seven years. He was mainly on the back stretch, at the pit road entrance. His duties will now take him off the track and behind the scenes. The track has brought back the Late Models this year and are considering bringing down the Carolina Late Models for some races, according to McConnell. The Speedway will feature several top fight racing events in ‘99 including two USAR Hooters ProCup races, The NASCAR Slim Jim AllPro Series will return to St. Augustine on April 17. The NASCAR Goody's DASH series will also make an appearance in 1999. The season at St. Augustine begins March 6 with opening night featuring all the Winston Racing Series Divisions NASCAR and the track points championships will get underway.
