February 8.1999 -by Jane Smith New Smyrna Speedway Speedweeks 99
Since Daytona was over for the day and Volusia Speedway was done also, New Smyrna was packed not only in the pits but stands as well. Tonight's program had the Antique cars running and the Florida Modifieds. But it was a very late night, or more like wee hours of the morn, before racing was done.
In the Late Model feature race, Bruce Lawrence in the #16 had the pole. Along side Bruce was David Rogers in his #11. Bruce lead the race for a few laps and was turned around on the backstretch which gave David the lead that he never let go of. Johnathan Brown, in hs #14, hit the wall hard but only his car was hurt, not him. Also Jr. Hanley hit the wall but he was not hurt either. But it took an hour to run a 25 lap race due to the wrecks and caution laps. Top five were:
1. #11 - David Rogers 2. #38 - Lee Faulk 3. #14x - Jeff Fultz 4. #l6 - Bruce Lawrence 5. #78 - B.J. McLeod or #96 - Jack Cook ** The fifth place finish was very close and it was hard to tell which won the race. Both cars stopped on the front stretch, as the top five do every night, so this did not tell me anything. So I put down both cars for you - one is fifth and the other is sixth.
In the Late Model division, it was Brad Barkis and his #10x leading the pack. Brad has done a very nice job on this car and it shows. Top five were:
1. #10x - Brad Barkis 2. #75 - Mike Beyer 3. #7 - Dan Delisle 4. #67 - Chad Allman 5. #21 0 Westlee Talons
In the NASCAR Tour Type and SK Mods, we saw the #99 of Jamie Tomaino with the pole. But it was not what Ted Christopher wanted in the #00 so he took the lead and never looked back. And the 18 year old driver of the #2 purple and green modified did an excellent job of taking third and keeping it. Only Mike Fitch in the #9nh had alittle trouble with the front stretch wall but Mike was fine. George Kent in the #26 tried very hard to take the lead from Christopher but just could not. But he did make a very good showing of will. Top five were:
1. #00 - Ted Christopher 2. #26 - George Kent 3. #2 - JR Bertuccio 4. #9 - Eric Beers 5. #98 - Doug French
Tonight we added the Florida Modifieds to the racing program. We saw none other than Ted Christopher from the NASCAR Tour Type Mods with the pole in a #00 Florida Modified. But it was Jerry Symons in the #66 taking an early lead and never looking back. Top five were:
1. #66 - Jerry Symons 2. #7x - 3. #19 - Tom Root 4. #l7 - DJ Hoelzle 5. #54 - Russ Thompson
In the Sportsman Division, we saw the #62 of Randy Hecker with the pole. But it was a very good fight for the lead between the #57 of Chad Pierce, the #62 of Randy, the #31 of Brian Holifield and the #8 of Richard Clouser. In the end, it was Chad Pierce in the #57 taking the win with #8 Richard Clouser very close behind him. Top five were:
1. #57 - Chad Pierce 2. #8 - Richard Clouser 3. #62 - Randy Hecker 4. #31 - Brian Holifield 5. #1 - Travis McCoy
In the Mini-Stocks, it was his fourth win in a row for Bob Doxie and his #2 Mini Stock. The kd1 of Terry Cady had the pole but nothing seems to stop Bob and his #2 car. Top five were:
1. #2 - Bob Doxie 2. #kd1 - Terry Cady 3. #03 - Timmie Hunley 4. #101 - Duane Gilford 5. #97 - Kelly Jarrett
In the Antique Racing cars, I am sorry but I do not have the gentlemen's names. But the finishing order for these cars were:
1. #2x 2. #92 3. #2 4. #71 5. #0
And this was night 4 at New Smyrna Speedway and SPEEDWEEKS 99. |
