In spite of the dark clouds and very cold wind, thirty four of our best were at SpeedWorld to qualify for the field of 31 cars. And would you believe, not one drop of rain came but it was very cold and windy.
Jack Cook got fast time with a 13.464 and Jack was the very first car to qualify. Second fast time was Pete Orr, followed by Michael Williams, Scott Bramlett, and Doyle Boatwright. David Rogers had to stop his qualifying several times because of something on the track in turns l and 2 which caused him to be much slower than he normally is. When pills were drawn for the top l0 cars, it was Wayne Jefferson with the pole for the race.
Beside Wayne was James Powell III. Wayne took the lead but James had a very strong car and took over the number l spot for almost the entire race. Luckily with so many cars on the track, we had very few accidents and cars badly hurt. Billy Pratt from Cocoa, Florida was one of the first to go out with a damaged car.
There were several very exciting moments to this race. One was with Jack Cook and a very smooth move he made passing on the inside to get into second spot. But the biggest surprise of the evening was when James Powell III and Pete Orr were battling for the number l spot and Pete had gotten around James and they accidentally bumped each other and both went around. This put them both to the end of the pack and from then on, the race belonged to Jack Cook.
This new series has proven to be a very worthwhile series and if you get a chance to see one of these races, please do so. The next race, the third in a series of eight, will be held at New Smyrna Speedway on June 5, l999. Mark your calendars now, you will love these guys.
Top five were: 1. #96 - Jack Cook 2. #1 - Wayne Jefferson 3. #77 - Daryl Shelnut 4. #51 - Jacob Warren 5. #32 - Michael Williams 6. #11 - David Rogers
