Do the Right Thing Night Punta Gorda, Florida - Charlotte County Speedway in partnership with local Southwest Florida law enforcement agencies will honor all recipients of Do the Right Thing awards with an evening of stock car racing and fun on Saturday, May 1 at 6:30 p.m. All Do the Right Thing award winners wearing their t-shirts will be admitted to the Speedway free and ride on the "Has Been" fire truck during the parade lap.
The Do the Right Thing program began in 1990 with the City of Miami Police Department after a young man found a gun in the trash can and turned it over to law enforcement. The idea of rewarding local youth for positive contributions to society soon caught on all over the United States with the largest number of chapters being in the Southwest Florida area. Local area agencies involved include the Punta Gorda Police Department, Cape Coral Police Department, Fort Myers Police Department, Sanibel Police Department, Lee County Sheriff's Office, Collier County Sheriff's Office and Sarasota County law enforcement.
The Top Cops racing division will be making their first appearance at the Speedway for the season. Top Cops are law enforcement officers from all over the state who race for charity. Local area fire fighters will be having a Chili Cook Off for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Other racing divisions will include Mini Cups, Sportsman, Pure Stocks and Road Warriors, as well as an exhibition race for the newly formed Allison Legacy Race Series.
The Allision Legacy Race Series named after the famous Allison racing family was begun by the sons of NASCAR great Donnie Allison. These three-quarter sized replicas of Winston Cup cars, powered by four cylinder truck engines run regional series in Florida, Alabama, North Carolina, Michigan, Wisconsin, Pensylvania, California and Illinois with 15 National Touring Series races scheduled for this year.
Racing action at CCS was cancelled on April 17 due to the much needed rain that surrounded Southwest Florida. Racing will be underway on April 24 with the American Race Trucks, Dwarf Cars, Limited Late Models, Open Wheel Modifieds, Sportsman and Mini Stocks competing.
