Wayne Morris Wins Al Gosney Memorial 100 at Hialeah | by Marty Little Hialeah, Fla - Wayne Morris held off the heavy challenges of Joe Winchell for the final 53 laps to win Saturday night's Al Gosney Memorial 100 for SARA Late Models at Hialeah Speedway.
Morris began the century run from the pole and he quickly distanced himself from the balance of the 21 car field. A caution on lap 41 for a spin by Richard Baer regrouped the field and allowed Winchell, who had started eighth and had moved to fourth, the opportunity he wanted.
As the field took the green flag, Winchell quickly jumped to the high side and dispatched Steve Dorer and Charlie Coyle to move to second and he quickly closed in on Morris's rear bumper. The two veterans then battled lap after lap in a classic cat and mouse game and crossed the stripe in the same order for Mossir's third SARA win of the season. Winchell collected runner-up money over Marty Pierce, fast qualifier, Dorer and Jonny Kay.
In support race action, Bobby Beauchemin lead all 50 laps to win the SARA truck event with an easy run over Mike Orth, Charlie Worth, Mason Love and Tim Shaffner.
Sean Bulaskas registered the first ever street stock victory in the 15 lap run as he topped T.C. McElyea and Ron Wilson while Tommy Styer made in mini stock score number 15 of the season as he bested Eli Pollard and Bill Calder. Councilman John Pettit scored his first win since coming out of a 22 year retirement as he out ran the 21 car cyclone field in wire to wire fashion. Bob Regula and Ron Regula chased Pettit to the checkers.
Action continues through early December at the historic Miami area oval. Have an opinion on this story? Post a message on our Message Board! news@karnac.orgor send a letter to the editor!
