Snowball Challenge at Five Flags | PENSACOLA, Fla. (September 20, 2002) - Donald Long led the final 46 laps to win the Snowball Challenge Series Late Model 150 on Friday night at Five Flags Speedway.
Long, the points leader in the season track standings, emerged from a caution on lap 4 with the lead. Ricky Turner, who gave up the lead in the pits, emerged fifth and worked his way to second.
But he could get no closer than 10 car lengths over the final 20 laps.
The win gives Long a provisional starting position in the Snowball Derby in December.
Scott Carlson was the fastest qualifier and led the first 23 laps until Turner took over the top spot and held it until a caution on lap 95.
There were only three cautions in the 16-car race. The first came on lap 6 when John Thompson spun and took out seven cars, including Stanley Smith, Greg Young, Roger Reuse, Keith Thorpe, Tim Bryant and two others.
J.R. Norris finished third, followed by Carlson and Ronnie Sanders.
Jessie Reid won a caution-filled Super Stock feature in a race that was called after 18 laps because of time.
Reid started on the pole and led every lap. On the restart to lap 18, Todd Britt spun and collected three other cars.
Race officials then called the race. Reid earned the win, while Kenny Williams was second and Mike Woodson third in the 19- car field.
Brandon Vaughn started 13th, took the lead on lap 8 and went on to win the 22-car Spectator feature.
Modified fast qualifier Sammy McMullin won the 20-lap feature. Richard Worsham was leading on lap 3 when he spun with Brent Etheridge and was forced to go to the rear of the field.
Ronnie Smith finished second, Jeff Godwin third and Worsham worked his way to fourth. Have an opinion on this story? Post a message on our Message Board! news@karnac.orgor send a letter to the editor!
