Bresnahan Finds the Money Again in Citrus Show Down 125 | By Larry MacMillan
(Inverness, Fl. 9/7/02) - When it comes to the big money races Mike Bresnahan is unbeatable at his home racetrack, Citrus County Speedway. When the green flag dropped on the 125 Wayne Anderson won the drag race to turn one to set the early pace in the all green flag racing Loomis the $5,000 win purse. Outside pole sitter Bresnahan settled in behind Anderson just waiting for the opening that came in lap 13 when the two got together on turn four when Anderson went wide and Bresnahan put his nose under and making the pass. Anderson spun out and suffered enough damage to his racecar that put him on the hook and ended his night and the bid for the win.
Bresnahan set the pace from lap 13 right to the checkered flag despite having six more restarts that tightened up the running order. James Powell was fast qualifier and seemed to be the only driver that had anything for Bresnahan. Powell gave way to Mike Franklin at one point in the race but regained the second spot after one of the late restarts. Franklin eventually dropped out of the race for a 10th place finish. Rex Struble finished a solid third just ahead of Mac Johnson who made every move he could muster to move around Struble. Johnny Kay was second fast qualifier but had several mishaps during the race but salvaged and fifth place finish and was the last car in the lead lap.
Daniel Keene Sr., Rich Pratt, Danny Johnson were the only other cars to finish when the checkers flew. Herb Neumann Jr. retired late in the race to salvage ninth over Franklin to round out the top ten. The next Citrus Show Down 125 is scheduled for October 12th.
In other action Mark Dominique captured his fourth feature win in the Sportsman points race. Terry Cater set the early pace but had to settle for second after a fierce battle with point leader Mike Veltman who came from the back of the field to finish third. Bill Loomis started on the outside pole and held off Dale Sanders in the race for fifth. Dale was driving brother Johnnys car due to his being taken out of the action with a broken leg.
James Green had his work cut out for him in the most physical Street Stock race of the season. Green and Corky Miley were all over each other in the see saw battle for the lead that went on for all 25 laps of the main event. When it was all over Green took the checkered flag but Miley all but destroyed both their racecars on the back straight nailing the #53 orange on two deliberate hits. Not only did Miley do a ton of damage to his car but also he lost his second place money and the points that he was racing for for Mike Veltman. The D.Q. put Mike Bell in second and 42 points out of the point lead due to Travis Nichol having to settle for a 12th finish with an early cut tire that put him in the pits for several laps under green. Danny Cretty continues to run strong and has a good lock on third place in the points race. Joe Viverito is picking up steam in the second half of the season with a fourth place finish and Owen Leigh came from the back of the 15 car starting field to pick up a fifth place finish. Another teenager went to the winners circle for the his first time. Fifteen year old Dustin DesChamps out ran points runner up Rob Wheatley and point leader Robbie Yoakam to the checkered flag for his first stock car win ever. Jimmy Bartley set the early pace holding out for fourth at the checkers with Tom Giddings rounding out the top five in Mini Stock action.
Roy Perkins roared to his second win of the season in Hobby Stock action. He is one of three multiple winners in the division and was being hounded right to the finish line by point leader Tommy Smith who was looking for his tenth win of the season. Dean Lawyer continues to run strong for his third place finish but is still looking for his first win. The only other winner in the division besides the Smith brothers and Perkins, Daniel Webster locked into a fourth place finish after a fierce battle with Dustin Aaron who settled for fifth.
Fourteen cars started the 1st Thunder Stock feature and Todd Downs worked his way from his eighth starting spot to the winners circle over hard charging Rex Mullis. Lee Keller slipped on the final lap to a third place finish followed by Stuart Madison and pole sitter John Donahue held out for fifth. First timer Bobby Taylor started the second feature in 11th spot and roared to the front in five laps and it was all over but the shouting when he took his first checkered flag over last weeks winner Dale Shelton. Robert Jordan held out for third. Tim Wilson recovering from the loss of his father Giz gave it all he had and out dueled Robin Bauer in the run for fourth.
Next Saturday night will feature all six divisions in heat and feature action plus Kids Rides in racecars at intermission. With only ten more weeks left in the points races it will be important for all the regulars to show up to defend or improve their division standings. Have an opinion on this story?
