Night Of The Polesitters At Lake City Speedway | By Jon Harney
Lake City, FL - The pole was the starting spot of choice at Lake City Speedway as four of the five who started from the inside of the front row drove away with comfortable victories.
The race of the night was in Modifieds. Starting from the inside of the third row, Derek Crawford methodically picked off his competition and took the lead on lap 10.
Crawford was fortunate to have made progress through the pack early for it spared him the battle for second raging behind him between Mark Whitener, J. O. Nobles, Steve Whitener, and Jason Garver. The quartet of cars ran as close as open wheel cars possibly could without wrecking. Positions got swapped, bumpers got bumped, and fans got excited with each passing lap. Few noticed Crawford crossing victory lane as the race in the pack had the attention of the masses. Mark Whitener was the best of the rest while J. O. Nobles and Steve Whitener bounced off each other in the final turn before Nobles beat him out by mere inches at the stripe. Jason Garver was close behind in fifth. Crawford picked up his seventh win of the 2002 season.

The Mini Stocks were on their way to an all-Stalnaker podium finish when Jeff Stalnaker Jr. provided the scare of the evening on the eve of his seventeenth birthday. His car got away from him in the fourth turn, hit the dirt berm, then proceeded to plant itself on the guardrail. Despite the hard hit, Jeff got out of the car on his own power and walked away from the incident. He was especially fortunate since several of the guardrail posts penetrated through the floorboard of his #10 Mustang. The winner of the race was Jeff Stalnaker Sr. in a "borrowed" ride from Curtis Clark. Bill Stalnaker took home second over Jacob Antis. Fourth and fifth were Jim Courson and Chris Antis respectively.
