Jonny Kay Florida Pro Series Winner

By Marty Little

HIALEAH, Fla. - Jonny Kay survived a late race tangle and wall banger to edge Dick Anderson in winning Saturday night's Bill Flingos Memorial 100 Florida Pro Series late model headliner at Hialeah Speedway.

Kay, wheeling the Systma/Hurricane Racing Chevrolet, got a good jump at the drop of the original green flag with Anderson hot on his back bumper. Several yellow flags kept the leaders honest but the first real incident occured on lap 49 when Steve Weaver, Jr and Eddie Hamby tangled on the front straight. Weaver was finished for the night while Hamby made repairs and returned.

As the laps clicked off Anderson turned up the pressure on Kay with third running Glenn Whitney eyeing the leaders for any problems he might capitalize on. Then it happened. Anderson got under Kay on lap 99 and when Kay tried to get back in line there was contact with Whitney in turn one. Kay spun and backed into the wall. The order went back to the last green lap and Kay went back to the lead with Anderson second. Ordered to the rear, Whitney protested and was black flagged and sent to the pits, his evening finished after a great run.

The final two laps went without incident with Kay the winner over Anderson, Joe Winchell, and youngsters Jay Middleton and David Hodges, Jr.

1. Jonny Kay 100 laps,
2. Dick Anderson 100,
3. Joe Winchell 100,
4. Jay Middleton 100,
5. David Hodges, Jr. 100,
6. Steve Godlewski 100,
7. Stuart Robertson 100,
8. Kevin McMickle 98,
9. Glenn Whitney 98,
10. George Richardson 98,
11. Mario Capone 97,
12. Ricky Thorpe 97,
13. Travis McCoy 86,
14. Eddie Hamby 53,
15. Ray Derry 25,
16. Steve Weaver, Jr. 22

Support events saw Steve Dielmann lead wire to wire to claim his second street stock win of the season with a difficult drive over Gary Padula, Ron Wilson, Marty Slattery and Chad Rutherford.

Eddie Lowery raced to his third mini stock victory of the season as he pushed his Toyota to the checkers ahead of Tommy Styer, Bill Calder, Bill Miner and Shawn Reiss.

Cyclone action saw Mark Bradley lead all 25 laps for his first win of the season ahead of Chad Orth and Bruce Moerlins while John Bentley notched his third pure strock victory over Roger Bohannon and Frank Kelliher. Bohannon won the figure 8 run.
