Eric Black and Bobby Orr Winners at Orlando SpeedWorld | After all the warm weather we have had, the coolest of the night was a welcomed change at Orlando SpeedWorld. The track was hot and the racing was even hotter. In the Sportsman heat race, we lost three of our best Sportsman when an engine blew causing a mass pile-up. Out for the night was #9 Kelly Jarrett, #17 Bill Loomis, and #82 Tommy Johnson. A very short night for these guys.
Kory Abbott #5 Bandolero sat on the pole for the feature race and was leading until the #6 of Patrick Conrad got around for the lead. Back was the #18 (#8 originally) from racing last weekend in North Carolina - Kory Abbott. Missing was Matt Martin #2 who is in Texas this weekend with his dad, Mark Martin. Once Conrad got the lead there was no passing him. Top five were: #6 Patrick Conrad, #60 Chad Akins, #18 Austin Carr, #32 Dana Layne, and #5 Kory Abbott.
After losing three of the top Sportsman in the heat race, it was the #5 of David Dinger on the pole. But it did not take #23 Robert Hight very long to pass Dinger and take the lead. Crossing the finish line behind Hight was the #5 David Dinger, #7 Bill Hall, #22 Homer Gordon and #77 Danny Shearer.
Jason Boyd #2x sat on the pole for the Open Wheel Modified feature race and winning from the pole. Shane Held #55 did a good job of staying in the second place position until the #75 of Bobby Blake took over. Following Boyd over the finish line was the #75 Bobby Blake, #55 Shane Held, #30 John Foerg, and #09 Rob Underwood.
Eric Black #10 sat on the pole for the Super Late Model feature. Black had a new car and was testing it out for the Sunbelt race next weekend at New Smyrna Speedway. Last weekend Black came to test and had a few problems so he told his crew chief, "just keep the tires on it and I will win" and that is exactly what he did after quite a few restarts. Russ Thomson's #54 did a very good job of holding the second place position for a great portion of the race but on one of the restarts, the #02 of Jared Allison took over that position. It was a rough night for the #20 of Ron Dicandio who seemed to get spun a few times and the #45 of Mack Hamby who had to retire from the race. In the end, it was the #10 of Eric Black, #02 Jared Allison, #54 Russ Thomson, #20 Ron DiCandio, and #30 Mark Emberson.
Super Stock feature saw #67 Darren Gould on the pole and winning from the pole. Gould said, "he was going to either wreck or win" but it was the latter that he got. Scott Tyler #27 was keeping close tabs on the #67 until he and the #50 of Jeff Wright spun. Wright was able to continue but Tyler was done for the night. Cory Freed #12 did a very good job again even passing his dad DeWayne Freed #11 taking over the second spot that his dad had held. Top five were #67 Darren Gould, #12 Cory Freed, #11 DeWayne Freed, #2 Ron Whaley and #4 Larry McCormick.
Tim "Missileman" McPhail #7 sat on the pole for the Mini Stock feature but while leading had a slight problem with his overflow tube and did a slip and slide giving Bobby Orr #30 the lead. McPhail's car was hooked up and would have won but you can't drive with wet tires. Folliwng Orr across the finish line was #99 Tom Clark, #07 Dick Lazslo, #8 Kenny Hankins, and #98 Jeff Davis.
The last race of the night was the Strictly Stocks. Winner was #5 Charlie Pitts but when the race was over, the top two finishing cars #5 and #66 were disqualified giving the win to the #3 followed by #38 Jim and #00 Mike Shaver.
Next weekend Orlando SpeedWorld will host the 2nd Pro Modified Series race with racing in all divisions except Super Late Models.
