Jared Allison Takes Super Late Model Win at OrlandoSpeedWorld | By Jane Smith
(KNS)A full moon, packed grandstands for a Figure 8 School Bus race and plenty of hot action on the track was the name of the game Friday night at Orlando SpeedWorld. In the pits were all divisions except Modifieds and a few surprise racers. Chris Fontaine, Eric Black, Ronnie Roach were on hand to add to the Super Late Model division. Plenty of racing for the fans.
The Bandoleros were the only division that had both heat and feature races. On the pole for both races was the #6 of Patrick Conrad who won both the races. Conrad was the first night winner in the new 2002 season. Top five for the heat race were #6 Patrick Conrad, #5 Kory Abbott, #63 Dalton Zehr, #2 Matt Martin and #21 Eric Needs. Top five for the feature race were #6 Patrick Conrad, #21 Eric Needs, #5 Kory Abbott, #63 Dalton Zehr, and #2 Matt Martin. Matt's dad, Mark Martin, got to enjoy watching his son Matt for the first time in the Bandolero division and was definitely one proud papa.
Carl Peters #1 sat on the pole for the Super Stock Feature and lead the race to the very end when the #12 of Cory Freed, last week's winner, passed Peters and came home with his second win of the season. Rick Johns in his new #11 also was in the fight for the lead and almost got Freed but just not quite this night. Top five were #12 Cory Freed, #11 Rick Johns, #1 Carl Peters, #50 Jeff Wright, and #4 Larry McCormick.
Bill Loomis #17 was set for the pole for the Sportsman feature race but elected to go to the rear for some reason which gave the number one starting position to the #23 of Robert Hight When the green flew, it was the #9 of Kelly Jarrett taking the lead and holding it for the entire feature. Paul Colgan #31 tried but could not catch Jarrett nor could Loomis. Top five were #9 Kelly Jarrett, #31 Paul Colgan, #17 Bill Loomis, #5, and #23 Robert Hight.
Eric Black #10 sat on the pole for the Super Late feature. Even with two big races this weekend, 15 cars took the green including Chris Fontaine #46, who began his racing career at Orlando SpeedWorld, Ron DiCandio #20 who will run the season this year at Orlando SpeedWorld, Ronnie Roach, and Sid Sites. Ray Rivers #98 also tried to run his first Super Late race but ended up losing his rotor, wheel and was towed off to return another night. Top five were #02 Jarred Allison, #10 Eric Black, #30 Mark Emberson, #47 Rusty Ebersole, and #14 Ronnie Roach. This was a rough night for the leaders as they kept spinning out and retiring to the rear. Better not to lead if you wanted to win.
Jeff Davis #98 lead the Mini Stocks as he sat on the pole but it was the #8 of Kenny Hankins taking home the win. Trish Gray was in the top five until she got tapped in the rear sending her into the wall along with Jamie Dixson #6. Gray was able to continue, Dixson had to retire. Also David Castello #1 did a great job of going side by side with Hankins but just as it looked like he was headed for Victory Circle, his engine developed a miss. Bobby Orr, winner of the past two weeks, was able to take the second spot over Castello but could not pass Hankins. Top five were #8 Kenny Hankins, #30 Bobby Orr, #1 David Castello, #07 Dick Laszlo (great job for our Mini Truck) and #98 Jeff Davis.
Strictly Stocks saw the #lx Joe Whittenton, #38 Walt Diel, #711 (our only 4 cylinder in the bunch), #00 Mike Simpson and #5 Charlie Pitts.
Since the school buses parked right in front of the pit grandstands as they broke, it was hard to see the race. The #14 won. There were 22 buses taking the green.
