Larry Osteen Wins Goodyear Challenge Late Model Race at Orlando SpeedWorld

Twenty eight Late Models took the green on a very
damp, chilly Friday night at Orlando SpeedWorld for
the second race of the new Goodyear Challenge Late
Models. Jason Boyd in the #15 set fast time but
after pills were drawn, it was the #26 of Mike
Murphy on the pole with Larry Osteen's #22 on
the outside.

Two red flags were thrown before the first lap of
the 100 lap event ever got underway. On the first
red flag, Jason Boyd #15 hit the turn 3 wall hard
sending the car temporarily up in the air. Also
involved in the wreck was the #39 of Mike Greenwell,
#46 of Doug Moff, #21 of Mark Stevens, #32 of Sean
Murphy,and the #1 of Fain Skinner. Moff's and Boyd's
car were tangled together in the turn 3 wall.

On the second restart, it was the #43 of Randy Dye,
#3 of Earl Beckner, #1 again of Fain Skinner, #lx
of Kenny Crites, #7 of Craig Brown, and the #60 of
Brent O'Neal. Only the #3 of Beckner, #7 of Brown
and #lx of Crites were able to go into the pits for
repairs and return. The rest was towed in for the
night.

Once again the green was thrown with Larry Osteen's #22
quickly jumping to the lead over the #26 of Mike Murphy.
While these guys were racing for the lead, the #3 of
Beckner, #66 of Jerry Symons, #lx of Crites and #01
of Williams had to pit. Just as the racing was
beginning to heat, caution 3 (yellow not red) was
thrown for the #27 of Richard Baer who did a 360
in turn 1.

When the green came out again, it was still Osteen
leading but it was the #07 of Wayne Morris and the
#26 of Mike Murphy putting on the show. Morris was
determined to take second place from Murphy and he
did. As they fought, the #29 of Mike Hovis was
sneaking up on all of them, passing one car after
another and finally ending up in the third place
position putting Murphy to fourth. The #07 of
Morris and the #29 of Hovis did alittle friendly
rubbing to add to the excitement of the night.

Caution 4 came out for the #77 of Tony Amico who
took alittle 360 view in turn 1. Just as racing was
green, the yellow came out again for caution 5 for
the #34 of Jeff Dufrense who also got a 360 view
of turn 1. Osteen continues to lead when the green
was thrown again but the #29 of Mike Hovis was hot
for the lead, alittle too hot. Trying to shake Osteen's
tree, he shook too hard and turned Osteen as he lead
the race. Hovis was sent to the rear of the lead lap
and Osteen was given back his lead position.

Once again the green was thrown with Osteen in first,
Morris second, Mike Murphy in third, Tim Harrington in
fourth and Sammy Graham in fifth. It was obvious
that Mike Murphy was going to try and turn Wayne Morris
since he was getting alittle cheering on over his
radio but in trying to turn Morris, he ended up turning
himself around and was sent to the end of the lead lap
for his agressiveness. This moved David Snodgrass's
#22x in fifth position.

At this point, 13 out of the 28 cars were left still
running. Caution 7 came out for the #16 of Bruce
Lawrence, Jr. who spun at the bottom of turns 3 and
4. Just as the race was restarted for the last few
laps, the #22x of Snodgrass broke seeing his hopes
for a top five finish vanish.

Larry Osteen held on for the win in race number 2 for
the Goodyear Challenge Late Model Series. Osteen was
followed over the finish line by Wayne Morris #07,
Tim Harrington #72, Sammy Graham #5, Doug Samion #04,
and Mike Murphy #26.

Matt Martin's #2 won the heat race for the Bandoleros
but it was the #63 of Dalton Zehr who won the feature
event. Zehr took the lead early in the feature and
never really had anyone close to him. Matt Martin
took second, Chad Adkins #60 third, Austin Carr #8
fourth, Dana Layne #32 fifth and Eric Needs #21
sixth.

The #6 of Jamie Dixson sat on the pole for the Mini
Stock feature but it was the #8 of Kenny Hankins
taking the lead early. The #1 of David Castello
was moving up fast but had to retire to the pits
when he lost his clutch. Tim "Missileman" McPhail
worked hard to get the lead but had alittle bad
luck along with Tim Clark's #15 who had worked
his way into the top five only to get turned around.
Eventually Bobby Orr, last week's winner, got
the lead and won his second race of 2002. Following
Orr was the #07 of Dick Lazslo, #98 of Jeff Davis,
#07x of Steve Wagner and the #28.

Shane Held's #55 sat on the pole for the Modified
feature but after a few bad starts, the pole position
was given to the #18 of Jared Allison. But it was
the #2x of Jason Boyd who drove thru the middle and
took the lead. Allison did a fantastic job of
chasing the #2x and trying to rattle his cage but
eventually had to retire. Boyd won with #75 of
Bobby Blake in second and the #30 of John Foerg
in third.

Paul Colgan's #31 sat on the pole for the Sportsman
feature but it was the #17 of Bill Loomis who passed
Colgan and won the race. Following Loomis across
the finish line was the #31 of Paul Colgan, #23 of
Richard Hight, #5 and the #93 of Bruce Gayton.

Super Stocks saw a first time winner with Cory Freed
in the #12. Bobby Simcox held the lead for the
beginning of the race until the #81 of Mike Peppler
took over. Cory Freed was right on the tail of
Peppler and in the last few feet of the race, Freed
finished just inches in front of Peppler taking his
first win. Following Freed was #81 Mike Peppler,
#4 Larry McCormick, #50 Jeff Wright, and #l Carl
Peters.

The #1 of Coy Riddle took the Strictly Stock win with
the #4 of Ronnie Quarno, #45 of Jim Lesley, #00 and
#1r in the top five. The #0 of Michael Seay was
running in the second place position on the last lap
when the #4 of Quarno tapped his rear end and sent
Seay in the frontstretch wall hard on the drier's die.
Seay was okay but that cannot be said for his car.
