Ocala Speedway Undergoes Resurfacing Off Season - Projects Nearly Completed | By Scott Hawkins
Ocala, FL., - As the 2002 racing season quickly approaches, the staff and management of the Ocala Speedway have been busy preparing the track and facility for the opening event on March 2rd. Most evident would be the resurfacing of several locations on the track itself.
Donnie Higgs, General Manager of the Ocala Speedway said, "We have refurbished the defective areas of the track, repaved to entire surface, and now we will begin sealing which, with weather permitting, will begin Monday morning." "It will smooth out some of the bumps and should help increase passing and side-by-side racing action.
The track is not the only item that will be improved for the 2002 racing season. Cookie Marcum, Owner of the Ocala Speedway has been busy with off track improvements including a new restroom facility. "The new bathrooms are almost done which was a goal we set last year," said Marcum. "We also intend to lower prices in the concession area."
With fan safety always in the forefront of her concerns, Marcum also plans to build a fenced recreation area where children can gather and play during the night. "The children tend to congregate just outside the track in an area where traffic comes in and out of the track. This designated area will be a safer place for the children to play." Also included are additional catch-fencing and wooden barriers along the back straight.
The 2002 racing season begins on March 2nd and will feature the Non-Winged F.A.S.T Sprints, the Classic Auto Racing Series, a 30 Lap Modified Feature plus all regular divisions.
