Gary McGoron, T.C. McElyea, Tommy Styer, Roger Bohannon Get First 2002 Wins at Hileah Speedway | Hileah Speedway raised the curtain on its 48th consecutive year of stock car racing Saturday night and it was former late model sportsman champion Gary McGoron who ran to a wire to wire victory in that division's 15 lap feature event.
Starting on the pole by the luck of the draw, McGoron, also a former motorcycle titlist, was in control throughout and was chased to the checkers by Danny Maddow, Jim Nall, Scott Crisafulli and Clint Wasteney.
Veteran T.C. McElyea proved the best of the street stocks winning their 20 lap run as he hold off the advances of Mike Orth, Gary Padula, Mike Kohut and Ron Wilson to claim his initial win of the season.
Eddie Lowery led 18 laps of the 20 lap mini stock feature but a late race tangle with Tommy Styer saw the latter bring his Pontiac home with the victory. When the two bumped, an alert Bill Calder took advantage and gained the runner-up spot where he finished over Lowery, Bill Minor, and Larry Johnson.
Cyclone King Roger Bohannon continued his winning ways, taking both the cyclone and pure stock 25 lap features. In the cyclones Bohannon bested Gabe Hernandez and Harvey Freeman while in the pure stocks, a division which has been inactive for several years, John Bentley and Johnny Bulaskas trailed.
Division hot shoe Doug Capps came out on top of the Mini Cup main ahead of Wayne Garhart and George Dundas.
