Auburndale Action Heats Up | By Billie May
The second week of Auburndale Speedways Winter Racing schedule was an exciting one. The night was filled with a lot of action in all the classes that ran including: Mini-Stocks, Modifieds, 4Cyls, 100 lap Super Street stock, Figure-8s, and Demo-Derby.
The 4 Cyl. class had few cars in their race, but had some action also. The # 43 of Kevin Lumley went to the inside of # 6 Chris Clump for the lead, # 97 David McCauley was challenging for the second spot with Chris Clump. Last lap the leader was having trouble with his car going out of gear and going very slow, but with the lead he had, # 43 Kevin Lumley was still able to hold on to the win, with # 97 David McCauley second, third went to # 6 Chris Clump, and # 96 Mark Montero.
The Open Wheel Modifieds took to the track, with # 7 Darren Jackson and # 12 Jay Coleman battling for the lead, Jay Coleman gave a tap to Darren Jackson but he was able to keep the lead. But on the backstretch Jay Coleman spun on his own. Ron Campbell # 34 went to the outside of # 71 Dave Dunkin for the second spot. Nose to tail # 21 Tim Stokes got underneath Dave Dunkin for third and then lost it and spun on the backstretch due to fluid leaking from his car falling from third to sixth. With two laps to go, # 34 Ron Campbell went to the inside of # 7 Darren Jackson for the victory, and # 12 Jay Coleman around # 71 Dave Dunkin for third, putting Dave Dunkin finishing fourth.
Mini-Stocks had action in the first lap causing a complete restart after they were going 3-wide into turn four and didn't make it. Robbie Storer # 9 was first to take the lead, with # 90 Randy Storer right beind him. Donnie Howell # 01 running third was challenged when # 97 Richie Acres went to the inside for the spot. Tony Elrod # 42 went up to fifth after making a pass on # 34 Terry Smith. For the second week in a row the # 9 of Robbie Storer took the win, with Randy Storer # 90 second, # 97 Richie acres posted his second consecutive third place finish, with # 42 Tony Elrod fourth and Donnie Howell # 01 rounding out the top five.
The Super Stocks were scheduled for 100 laps, just in a different fashion. They qualified for the race with # 1 Bubba Edwards setting fast time. They made the race into two 50 lap segments, including a couple V-8 Street Stocks to make the car count alittle better, so it was two classes in one which made it very interesting at the finish of this race. Carl Thompson # 26 got into the wall on the first lap collecting # 2 Paul Gibbs, and the # 2x of George Gorham Jr. went over the top of the trunk of # 32 David Holland and almost flipping. Complete restart, with a couple laps into the books the # 08 Glenn Gordon lost a tire in turn four, causing another caution. Bubba Edwards which had the lead from the start of the race was out front once again, with # 56 James Wright III inside of # 8 Jim Orisich for second, Sam Cressman # 97 followed and passed for third, which made a good battle for fourth with Jim Orisich and # 69 Bob Gorsich side-by-side. At the front of the pack James Wrig! ht III was giving Bubba Edwards some taps from behind but Bubba Edwards was able to hold onto the lead. Lap 22 # 56 James Wright III went into the lead, with the battle for second between Sam Cressman and Bubba Edwards. Caution again when # 40 of Robert Eddy got turned around. Single file restart, Bubba Edwards got to the inside of Sam Cressman for second, Sam Cressman falling back when Jim Orisich passed him for third, putting him fourth and rounding out the top five was # 32 Daivd Holland. That was the end of the first 50 lap segment.
The second segment started the way they finished, with some cars coming back into the race after making repairs from the first segment. Single file start, with # 56 James Wright III showing the way, # 1 Bubba Edwards went to the inside for the lead with a clean pass, and caution # 97 Sam Cressman spun, they go to the last completed lap so that put James Wright III back in the top spot. Lap 65 Jim Orisich # 8 spun # 1 Bubba Edwards while running second, both had to go to the rear, which makes the finish interesting because they should have been placed in front of the lapped cars but weren't until many laps later, which had # 12 David Williamson and # 89 Mike Harrison in victory lane protesting the finish. When asking an assistant flagman what had happened he said "The scorers had made a mistake and didn't correct it until many laps later, but the finishing order would stand the way they were".Top two weren't in question, just third on back, so that put # 56 James Wright III t! he winner, second # 1 Bubba Edwards, # 8 Jim Orisich third, # 89 Mike Harrison fourth and fifth went to # 69 Bob Gorsich.
The Figure-8 race consisted of 7cars which at the end would only have 3 running at the end, with alot of flat tires causing cars to fall out of race. Jr. Myers # 21 took the lead from the start with # 78 Bob Hage running second. # 98 Jim Thunder stopped at the middle of the X and couldn't restart his car so the "red flag" came out. With Jr. Myers still showing the way # 94 Charlie Myers pulls out of the race with mechanical problems after running third. Robbie Hage # 74 and # 89 Rodney Davis got around Bob Hage for second and third spots. Rodney Davis putting pressure on # 74 Robbie Hage for second, lap 15 got the job done and went into second. A 1/2 a lap later Robbie Hage pulled out of the race with a flat tire, then his team mate # 78 Bob Hage pulled out of the race with a flat tire, moving # 28 Scott Gullett to third while running the last 2 laps with a tire going down. Winning the race was # 21 Jr. Myers, second # 89 Rodney Davis, and third # 28 Scott Gullett. It seemed! to be a race of whos tires would last the longest?
In all my years of going to the races, I have never seen a Demo-Derby stared like this one. With 13 cars entered, they started half on the front stretch, and half on the back stretch, allowing the cars to gain alot of speed when hitting each other for the first time. The # 8 and # 33 were chasing each other , until the # 8 had a fire and it went out. At it again the # 8 and # 33 got stuck against another car and the # 108 hit them and set them free, at the end # 108 and # 8 were stuck together, and ended up the # 33 of Scott Mack McNomee won.
