Phil Antonino Gets Another Sportsman Win at Hialeah | HIALEAH, Fla. - Despite heavy pressure from the first lap, veteran Phil Antonino held on to claim his second victory of the season in winning the 25-lap late model sportsman headliner Saturday night at Hialeah Speedway.
Danny Maddox and Gary McGoron battled furiously at Antonino's rear bumper, but when the checkers flew Antonino had the win ahead of McGoron's Pontiac with Maddox a close third. David Weaver and Bobby Shelton rounded out the top five. With his runner-up finish McGoron assured himself of his second consecutive division title.
Street stock action saw Mike Orth scamper to his sixth win on the season as he topped arch rival Chalo DeCastro for the victory in the 25 lap run. Gary Padula, Fred Schenk and Marty Slattery were next to the stripe.
Buddy Sizemore broke out of traffic quickly and dominated the mini stocks to win the small car 25 lap run. David Russell, who has battled Sizemore almost weekly for the past two months, settled for second money over point leader Kenny Strong, Scott Rogers and Richard Thomas.
Cyclone action saw Roger Bohannon, out of victory lane since July, storm up the outside lane to grab the lead on the last lap and win the 25 lap main, his fifth this season. Ken Voight was the runner-up over Keith Vitale, Heather Lunsford and Lynn Reid.
Doug Capps topped the visiting mini cup racers ahead of Brett Jameson and Mike Harrison.
Weekly racing continues thru Dec. 9 at the historic Miami-area speedway. Have an opinion on this story? Post a message on our Message Board! or send a letter to the editor!
