Crystal Motor Car Co. Limited Sportsman 50 Rescheduled for September 23 | Hurricane Gordon Wins out at Citrus (Inverness, FL; 9/17/2000) For the fifth time in the 2000 season, Citrus County Speedway had to bow to the weather with an approaching hurricane on the west coast of Florida’s doorstep. Gordon became a Hurricane at about noon on Saturday and promoters, Billy Hooker and Steve Ziebarth, and general manager, Bob Eldredge, kept a close eye on the forecast with the storm throwing out bands of rain into Citrus County throughout the afternoon. At 1:30 p.m., the forecast called for a 100% chance of rain. In everybody’s best interest, they called the races so no one would make the trip for the special races only to have to turn around and go home because of a rain out as well as give local drivers time to make preparations for the storm’s arrival, which was expected to make landfall on Sunday afternoon.
The scheduled Crystal Motor Car Co. Limited Sportsman 50 has been rescheduled for next Saturday night, and the $5000 plus purse remains intact with $1,000 going to the winner. Qualifying time trials will pay the fast qualifier $100, with an additional $100 for the “hard charger” and “hard luck award” from Max’s Tractor Service. Other sponsors of the race are M. Dominique Mobile Home Restoration, Taylor Made Homes and Builders Surplus.
Second through 24th will receive the following payoff: 2nd - $650 3rd - $525 4th - $425 5th - $400 6th - $300 7th - $275 8th - $250 9th - $200 10th - $150 11th thru 24th - $50
Late Models return next week for an increased purse in the ICC Big Purse Challenge for $1,300 to win and an additional $100 for second and third. Late Model drivers voted last week to qualify weekly in time trials with the top qualifier pulling a pill for 6, 8, or 10 top qualifiers to pull pills for their starting positions rather than qualifying in heats. The balance of the field will line up according to qualifying times.
Non-Inverness cars can run the F60 Hoosier tire for two weeks before making the transition to our tire, the Hoosier 20/40. Hoosier has advised us that there is no competitive difference in the tires.
The new regular payoff has been increased from 3rd back to 10th by approximately $25 per spot with 13th thru 24th picking up a minimum of $100. This is the fattest short track Late Model purse in Florida. Added to next week’s program, Sept 23rd, will be the Dwarf Cars, Street Stock, Mini-Stock, Hobby Stock and Street Legal Junkers. The rained out Figure-8 race will be made up on September 30th.
