Jim Childers Wins Third In a Row In TBARA Sprints | by Dave Westerman The T.B.A.R.A. Sprint cars brought their traveling show to Orlando Speedworld Friday night and it was Riverview's continuing his recent hot streak as he took the measure of a top-notch field. Childers, the current TBARA points leader, started tenth as outside polesitter Todd Schmidt jumped to an early lead ahead of Rookie challenger Shane Miller and Kevin Cahill.
Childers was on the move taking third spot from Cahill just before the only caution of the race flew on lap 14 when Wayne Reutimann, Jr.'s car stopped on the speedway. Schmidt held the top spot on the restart but Childers was flying, quickly dusting off Miller then passing Schmidt three laps later for the lead. Childers ran off to his third-straight TBARA win. Schmidt ran a strong second with Miller getting a career best third. Cahill was fourth and Wayne Reutimann, Sr. took fifth.
Rounding out the top ten were Dave Pletcher, Keith Butler, Sport Allen, Ernie Teed, Jr. (driving for the injured Shaun Farr) and Shane Butler. Kevin Cahill, Shane Butler and Wayne Reutimann, Sr. won the heats.
Jason Boyd topped a wild Modified feature that had side by side action nearly every lap. Bill Gunn had just passed Jon Compagnone, Jr. for the lead when Boyd stopped on the Speedway with a flat tire to bring out the caution. Boyd pitted quickly for a new skin and got out before the green flew again. Compagnone re-passed Gunn for the lead on the restart and their battle resumed and lasted until the last lap when they tangled and spun into the infield. Boyd made a quick move around Jimmy Wilkens into the lead and raced to his tenth win of the year. Wilkens was second over Frank Polly, Wayne Parker and Steve Thornbrugh.
Mike Murphy took win number five in the Late Models outrunning Jacob Warren, Chad Allman and Wesley Bass. Mini-Stock honors went to point leader Kelly Jarrett who led all the way to top Kenny Hankins, Michael Seeright, Rose Dickerson and Tony Davidson.
The Mini-Cup cars also visited the Speedway and it was St. Cloud's Josh Hermann scoring a popular victory. First heat winner Paul Tyson was second over Terry Lee Tullis, Mike Sweet and Doug Smith. Colt Smith won the second heat.
Don Smith was the winner in the Strickly Stock class with Kerry Payne, Russ Noyes, David Czerwynski and James McConnell rounding out the top five. -Dave Westerman-
