Antonino Gains First Win Since '98 in Late Model Sportsman | (Hialeah, FL; 7/8/2000) Using his pole position to good advantage, Phil Antonino led all 25 laps to win the Late Model Sportsman headliner Saturday night at Hialeah Speedway. An infrequent competitor in recent seasons, Antonino had Danny Maddox all over his back bumper, but managed to hold the challenger off to gain his first win since the 1998 season. Point leader Gary McGoron checkered in third over Travis McCoy and David Weaver.
Mike Orth only led the 25-lap Street Stock feature for the last 100 yards enroute to his fourth win of the season. Jake Reedy paced the run from the drop of the green flag, but in the closing laps his car pushed out of the groove; Orth made a dive to the inside on the final circuit and got the victory. Reedy edged the fast closing Craig Seewald for second with Rick Lutz and John Covington next to the stripe.
Mini-Stock action found David Russell and Steve Quick locked in a furious battle for most of the 25-lap run and they finished in that order with Russell claiming his eighth win this season. Bill Miner, Tommy Dittmer, and Harold Cross trailed the lead duo at the line.
Cyclone points leader Roger Bohannon topped Rick Lenhardt and Mike Powers to win the 25-lap main, then came back to win the special Pure Stock run over Heather Lunsford and Lenhardt. The added road course event saw Lenhardt the winner too ahead of Gabe Hernandez and Bohannon, while Tom North easily bested the visiting Mini-cup field.
