Pope back on top of DeSoto Mini-Stocks | Sonny Hughes of Bradenton roared from green flag to the Pepsi winner's circle in the Southern Comfort Pools Limited Late Models 50 lap feature event Saturday night at DeSoto Speedway. "I'm just glad to come back and win," Hughes said. "I've been running second for the past few weeks. Jeff (Wogoman) gave me a good run for it but he raced me clean. He's a tad faster than I am but I got him on the start and hung on for the rest of the race. It was a hard clean race." Wogoman set fast time for the event with a 14.97 (90 mph)lap time with Hughes just three/one hundredth of a second off. When the pills were drawn for the top ten starting positions Hughes pulled the pole with Wogoman on the outside. Hughes and Wogoman held their positions through out the demanding 50 lap race with Jimmie Best of Sarasota moving from a fourth place start to third place. Jeff Wogoman of Ft Myers placed second in the action packed feature. "We've got a problem somewhere," Wogoman said. "The car didn't want to restart but Sonny still had us covered. We just need to update our program just a little." Best hung tough in the race although threatened by Tommy Kelly of Myakka. "The car was a little loose," Best said. "It was pretty good in the beginning. On the cautions I could get them because the tires would cool. Tommy was right behind me but he drove me real clean. I needed this one." Kelly finished fourth and Teddy Nelson of Pinellas Park in his first Limited Late Model race placed fifth. Dennis Wilson Jr of Bradenton and Duane Best of Sarasota put on the fantastic finish of the night in the Express Personnel Service Street Stock feature event. With Wilson leading going into the last two laps, Duane Best made a move from second place and passed Wilson to take the lead. One lap later Wilson made a similar pass regained the lead and go on to take the win. "That was a great race," Wilson said. "There was a little bumping but we're friends and it makes it exciting." "Man, that's racing," Best said. "I bumped him, he bumped me back. Nothing intentional, just great racing." Rich Clouser of Grant took third place. Lonny Miller of Bradenton won the Selective HR Solutions Sportsman feature event. Miller, who has been off a bit, claims a change in wheel as his way to the checkered flag. "I changed the black rim to a chrome one," Miller said and laughed. "I really don't know but the car sure was hooked up and handling good. Steve gave me some heat but it looks like we got the car back under us again." Steve Gainey of Bradenton placed second and Jimmy Cook of Sarasota took third place. Gary Flynn of Palmetto took the win in the Contemporary Cabinetry & Closet Concepts Pure Stock feature event. Wayne Carroll of Sarasota placed second. Troy Davis of Bradenton took third place. Mike Mitrisin of Brooksville took his second win in a row in the Manatee Lumber Modified Minis feature event. "Every since we got her she's been afire," Mitrisin said. "The flames did it. (Flames painted on his fenders) We just had to kind of put her out there and rock and roll. When we're there we're there." Kenny Hankins of Lakeland placed second and Randy Koon of Lakeland took third place. "I haven't done anything to the car," said David Tart of Naples who won the Legends second straight feature event. "I took it off the trailer this morning and played with the brakes a little. Still didn't help I lost the brakes, but won the race." Jason Reisman of Eustice placed second and Doug Longwell of Naples took third place. Arlin Pope of Bradenton took the checkered flag in the Q Auto & Injury Attorneys Stock Minis feature event. Pope, who was leading by just one point, was able to his lead in the points race. "Everything is new in this car," he said. "We're still trying to get her dialed in, and Jesse and Tony didn't make it easy. A caution helped me out. It tightened the field and got me closer so I could work with them a little. This win will give us a little in the points but it won't be much." Tony Elrod Jr of Kathleen placed second and Jesse Dutilly of Bradenton took third place. by: Ken Willis
