Travis McCoy In Winner's Circle At Hialeah! | HIALEAH, Fla. - Second year late model sportsman driver Travis McCoy turned back the veterans Satuarday night as held off the late race advances of Joe Winchell to win the 25 lap feature event at Hialeah Speedway.
McCoy led from his pole position and had no challenge for the first have of the run, but a late race yellow flag closed the field and Winchell turned up the pressure. McCoy drove his own race and notched the win, his first this season, over Winchell, Danny Maddox, point leader Bob Regula and Jim Nall.
Mike Orth proved the best of the street stock set for the third time this season as he took the lead from Craig Seewald on lap 10. Rick Lutz claimed second money over Bart Collins, early leader T.C. McElyea and Seewald in the 25 lap run.
Mini stock hot shoe David Russell scored his fourth consecutive win in the 25 lap main as he defeated points leader Kenny Strong. Bill Miner was a distant third ahead of Brian Sweeny and Jim Miner.
Tony Barreca led wire to wire for his first cyclone score of the season with a good drive over Charles Whitehouse, J.R. Fitch, Winchell and Roger Bohannon after 25 laps.
The pure stocks ran a special feature with Mike Kohut claiming his first career victory in the quarter century run. Roger Pfau checkered second over Mike Powers, Bohannon and Rick Lenhardt.
Pfau came back to defeat Lenhardt and Barreca in the figure eight race.
