Boatwright Gets First 2000 Victory At Columbia

LAKE CITY, Fla. - Using an old car which had recently been rebuilt, veteran Doyle Boatwright hustled to the lead on the third lap and went on to score his first win of the season in the 25 lap late model stock feature Saturday night at Columbia Motorsports Park.

Al Beckelheimer, Jr set the early pace but Boatwright, in the Henry Hodges Construction entry, had things working just right and set sail by lap four and was never headed. Beckelheimer claimed second money over Richard Tucker, Chris Tedder and Lucien Gauthier.

With a fresh engine under the hood of his No. 85 Florida modified, Wayne Parker led all 20 laps for a wire to wire win in the 20-lap main event. Mike Johnson gave chase but had to settle for runner-up honors ahead of Richard Ferry, John Byrd and John Crawford.

A big crash at the drop of the initial green flag saw the field scatter but Jeff Prescott never flinched as he grabbed the lead and won the 20-lap street stock run. Gale Grayer, who triggered the opening round melee when he missed a shift, checkered second after passing Ronnie Cook on the last lap as Cook had a tire going flat but hung on for third. Swain Norris and Brad Fiene were fourth and fifth respectively.

Jumping from the second row, William Jerkins bested the pure stock field in the 15 lap headliner. Danny Coleman, Trish Berry, Pam McRae and Robert Young rounded out the top five runners.
