DEWAYNE DEMPSEY WINS TOMMY PATTERSON MEMORIAL | DeWayne Dempsey sat back, ran his line, and waited for the right time to take the lead and win the Tommy Patterson Memorial last weekend at New Smyrna Speedway. Tank Tucker set fast time but after pills were drawn for the top l0, it was Robert Hamm on the pole for this annual event.
The race had two red flags and seven cautions but none of the red flags were serious injury to drivers and only one car gave fans and fellow racers heart failure and that was the #98 overturning on the backstretch right next to the pit entrance. Within seconds, the 98 was overturned, on it's roof and fans and fellow racers waited for the driver to appear out of the car. When he did, a round of applause was heard for the unhurt but shaken up driver.
Robert Hamm lead for most of the entire race with Dempsey following behind Hamm and Jerry Symons behind Dempsey. When Dempsey took the lead, Symons and Hamm were battling it out for second place when the #52 of Hamm was turned on the frontstretch as he and Symons came off turn 4. Hamm was not really hurt until the #57 of Jim Flynn, with no place to go, slid into Hamm's car. This put the #52 and #57 out of race action and gave the lead permanently to Dempsey. When the red flag was lifted, Symons went to the end of the lead lap for turning Hamm accidentally.
From then on, it was DeWayne Dempsey leading the way to the l00 lap mark of the Tommy Patterson Memorial. Doug Moff did a great job of making the top five and Jerry Symons worked his way back up to the top five also. Twenty three cars came for this annual event and fans got to see one of the best l00 lap Open Wheel Modified races of the 2000 season so far.
