Maddox edges Beaucheman at Hialeah | HIALEAH, Fla. - Danny Maddox, after enjoying a big lead early on, held on to edge a fast closing Bobby Beauchemin and win the 25 lap late model sportsman headliner Saturday night at Hialeah Speedway. Maddox, aboard Emery Titus' Pontiac, built a huge lead, but a late race yellow closed the field and afforded Beauchemin, who had started dead last,the chance to run for the win. Beauchemin gave it a good shot but came about a foot short after a surge at the line. Tim Shaffner checkered third over point leader Bob Regula and Gary McGoron. In the diciest event of the night, Mike Orth and John Covington swapped the lead in the street stock 25-lap run a half dozen times before Orth gotthe lead on the final lap for his first win of the year.Covington claimed runner-up honors ahead of Curt Haywood, Gary Padula and RayMalin. Young Troy Howell drove the best race of his short career to register hisfirst career feature win in the mini stock 25 lapper. Wheeling his dad'sbright purple Pinto, Howell grabbed the lead from the pole then thwarted thechallenges of Steve Quick for the victory. Buddy Sizemore, Bob Goode andvisitor Brian Sweeney completed the top five finishers. Roger Pfau, winless for a couple of seasons, drove his Nova to the win inthe 25-lap cyclone headliner. Susan Reid led from the pole to lap 13 whenPfau took command. John Bentley pressuerd Pfau for many laps but settled forsecond in the final rundown. Mark Schodeinger, point leader Roger Bohannonand Reid were next to the stripe. Former champion Tom North easily topped the Mini Cup racers over DougCapps and Paul Tyson.
