This Friday night at Orlando SpeedWorld, we remember our friend Homer Gordon.
Homer raced for many years at Orlando SpeedWorld and New Smyrna Speedway and usually could be found in the pits at many other tracks when a big race was going on.
Homer never had a harsh word for anyone and NEVER met a stranger. The only bad thing of Homer was that he could talk anyone too death about his race car, his friends, and his race.
To look at Homer, he did not look sick. But Homer was a bachelor and as bachelors go, did not eat the best foods for his body and probably more fast food than home cooked food. And being a typical man, did not go see doctors like he should.
Whether Homer was racing or not, he was there every Friday and Saturday for all of us. If you needed a part, he would loan it to you. If you needed tires, he was the King of buying the modified take-offs and would gladly sell them to his friends. If you needed a shoulder to cry on, he was there.
Homer died on a Saturday night at New Smyrna Speedway in his new firesuit and his new car. Butch Pierce had finally gotten his new car done and he could not have been more proud. He was so excited that day that he forgot his fire shoes and was stuck wearing his work boots for racing. A few teased him that since he did not have his shoes, he could not race but Homer just gave them that famous elfish smile of his and went on.
When Homer's car hit the backstretch wall at New Smyrna, no one thought it was because his heart had failed. Everyone was concerned how upset he would be about his new car. Then, we knew something was wrong, very wrong and we found out that we had lost our friend.
Friday night at Orlando SpeedWorld we celebrate the life of our friend Homer Gordon, gone, but NOT FORGOTTEN. Have an opinion on
