Charlotte County Motorsports Park has been granted a five year extension on the current lease with the Charlotte County Airport Authority. The lease has been extended to March 31, 2013. The CCAA was unanimous in its decision, voting 5-0 in favor.
"I just have to pinch myself, it is like winning the lottery", said owner Bobby Diehl. He credits the turn around at the track to the local fans and drivers who have stepped up and supported the new ownership. He also said, "We have helped twenty-eight different charities and they have benefited from activities a the speedway since the beginning of the year."
Renovations now scheduled to go forward include construction of two new three story towers. The towers will replace the make shift scoring tower constructed after the track was destroyed by Hurricane Charley, and are expected to begin rising in 60-90 days.
Also planned is a seven day a week motor sports theme restaurant, and 30-50 new garages which will be leased to racers or businesses. The garages are expected to be 35X30 feet.
The planned new four lane highway is expected to be completed in 2010 which will run along the northern border of the speedway, all part of the airport commercial development anchored by a Publix warehouse. As part of the preparation for the road the pits will all be moved behind the back straightaway by years' end.
