Scofield Takes His 07 Chevy Back To Winners Circle | KARNAC Staff Report
Jeff Scofield returned to the Sunoco Sunbelt Series with a visit to the Columbia Motorsports Park Winners Circle Saturday night. This is Scofield's first Sunbelt win of 2007, after taking the Sunbelt Series Championship in 2006 and dominating the series all last year.
Scofield drove from the seventh starting spot for the win, finding Tim Russell the biggest challenge on this particular night. "It was a pretty good hot rod", Scofield said after the race.
Scofield dropped a spot early falling in behind Daryl Shelnut, but then picked off the cars in front of him one at a time, eventually passing leader Jeff Choquette around lap 80.
"Timmy Russell was a pretty good challenge, when I caught him he was running third and it took me probably 20 laps to get past him," Scofield said adding that "he was the toughest to pass, because he was running pretty smooth lines, and then it took about 10 laps to get by Choquette."
Scofield, suspended for the last Sunbelt Series race at New Smyrna, is not running for the points championship, but is looking forward to run ning the big late model races in Florida.
Tim Russell's third place finish will keep him atop the Sunoco Sunbelt points race.
Young David Wilson, driving the number 83 super late model under the direction of Dick Anderson, finally had a complete race, ending up in sixth place. Wilson was sent to the rear twice by Sunbelt officials, but kept his cool and his car intact and drove back through much of the field. Wilson had contact with Scofield on lap 2 and had to restart from the 19th spot.
"A win would have been nice, but I learned how to be patiently agressive", Wilson said.
Wilson will be running at USA international with the postponement of the ASA Late Model show at South Georgia Motorpsorts Park.
On Friday June 1, the Sunoco Sunbelt Series moves to Lakeland's USA International Speedway for a major 200 lap test, the first leg of the Florida Triple Crown events. Friday is practice for the teams with the Guaranteed Concrete & Layout Florida Triple Crown getting underway at 7:30 PM on Saturday night.
