Robbie Cooper picked up the win in Ocala Modifieds.
After rain postponed the festivities at Ocala Speedway for one week, over 1200 racing fans found out that some things are definitely worth waiting for! After the one week delay the opening night of the 2007 racing season at Ocala had all divisions running and featured heated racing action on the track.
At one point before racing began there were so many drivers and cars trying to get into the pits that traffic was blocked on the highway outside of the track, prompting general manager Lou Trembley to play "traffic cop" for a time.
A packed grandstand, a packed pit area, and some traffic issues outside of the speedway, were hassles to some, but a great hint of a exciting 2007 season at Ocala Speedway.
The V8 Pure Stock feature began with Brent Cooper on the pole and featured close racing as James Erickson pushed him for the entire 20 laps.
Larry Welter Jr. also challenged from third place but Cooper proved to be just that much faster. It was Cooper, Erickson, and Welter Jr. finishing first, second, and third, respectively.
Speedy Pete Close started on the pole for the Street Stock feature and maintained his lead throughout to take the win. He was followed closely by Dan Trembley for second and Doc Batson for third, in a race that featured plenty of action all over the track. Some of the closest racing action in the race was between Shane Nichols and Larry Welter Jr, who raced side by side for fourth place for lap after lap.
Thunder Stocks is a new name for the division formerly known as the V8 Rookies at Ocala, and features drivers who have little or no experience in racing. Their 12 lap feature race saw Bill Thomas win from the pole, but with Josh Brown challenging him at every turn in a caution free event. Chris Oliver finished in third place in his first race ever.
The new Late Model division at Ocala drew a large field of cars and included many notable drivers. Daniel Webster started from the pole but was unable to hold his lead thanks to a hard charging Wayne Anderson who passed him on lap 6.
From that point Anderson stretched his lead in a car powered by a crate engine to take the win, followed by Scott Milar and Scott Gosenbacher. The race featured two short caution periods which bunched up the field, but Anderson managed to distance himself from the field on both restarts and hold his lead.
A large field of Sportsman racers took the green flag behind pole sitter, Tim Shull for their feature event. Two red flag periods due to fluids on the track, resulted in the race being shortened to 15 laps in order to speed up the night's events.
Tim Shull lead from the start, but was under constant pressure from Matt Blum for the entire race. Shull and Blum put on quite a show and finished first and second respectively.
When the green flag waved to the Modified Division it was almost no time before pole sitter Al McCafferty was passed by the eventual winner, Robbie Cooper. Cooper and McCafferty were followed last year's divisional champion, Troy Robinson in third place.
The 4 Cylinder Stocks were the last points event for the night and featured a frightening lap 1 incident in turn 4 when Terry Dunbar hit the wall attempting to avoid a spinning car. Dunbar was alright but his car was done for the evening. Once racing continued Justin Elwood passed pole sitter Richard Kuhn to take his first feature win ever. Kuhn was second followed by Melissa Hunley.
And the night was topped off by an exciting School Bus Figure 8 race that featured plenty of beating, banging, and also a rollover.
Steve Visneski managed to walk away from his bus after it flipped onto it's side and caused the race to be red flagged briefly. Larry Welter Sr. won the race in his first attempt at racing a bus.
Next Friday night at 7:30 Ocala Speedway will welcome the TBARA Winged Sprints as they tackle the toughest 3/8ths mile in the southeast.
