The Super Late Models and the Tampa Bay Area Racing Association Winged Sprints were the highlight of this night of racing at the newly paved New Smyrna Speedway. The half-mile near Daytona now boasts one of the fastest half-mile asphalt circuits in the country and seeing the open wheel cars on the pavement was just simply spectacular.
Twenty-two Super Late Model cars took the green flag with New Smyrna veteran ace Mike Fritts on the pole. As often happens when Fritts starts in the lead, he is very tough to beat, especially in the shorter races such as this 30 lap affair. B.J. McLeod (#78) started outside Fritts, and once the field got up to speed Fritts had a good lead with the contenders quickly shaking out to be McLeod, Jay Middleton (#74) and Ryan Sieg (#39).
Jeff Choquette tangled with a lapped car, bringing out the caution on lap 8 and ending the Florida drivers night with two wreckers needed to get his #70 off the track.
After the mess was cleaned up, and #3 Russ Shaw was sent off the track with leaking race car, Fritts roared to a huge lead over Sieg while McLeod and Middleton both seemed ready to contest for the second spot, while the rest of the field was involved in a whole different race.
Ryan Sieg has a mirror full of McLeod and Middleton
McLeod grabbed the third spot from Middleton at lap 20 and looked like he would challenge Sieg very quickly, but a lap later the 78 machine was forced to pit due to mechanical failure.
Mike Fritts in a familiar setting
A caution near the end of the race gave Sieg one shot to catch Fritts. Not much of a chance though, as Fritts stormed home for a wire to wire win so familiar to FASCAR faithful.
The TBARA Winged Sprints gave the fans a little extra tonight, needing a B Main to set the field for the feature.
Rookie TBARA racer D.J. Hoelzle, driving the David Steele machine of 2006, won the B Main, but his thrill was to be short lived, to say the least.
After enjoying a visit with the New Smyrna fans to sign a few autographs fired up their bad machines, did their four wide salute and then thundered into action, vapor trails off some of the wings. Amazing stuff. No matter how many times we see these cars in action, it never ceases to amaze how talented this group of drivers are.
The tires for the winged sprints were not holding up so good on the new pavement and made things a little trickier than usual for this bunch. When these cars get wound up at New Smyrna, it can be a breathtaking experience, especially from the vantage of the pits or the turn three stands.
The turn three fans got a close up encounter on the first lap as Hoelzle wacked the wall hard enough to twist his black number 15 and bring out the red flag for about 15 minutes. D.J. was unhurt, the car not so lucky.
On the restart pole sitter Wendy Mathis took the green but as on the first try the John Gilbert, Jr number 7 was out front with (#0) Dude Teate in hot pursuit. By lap 15 Troy DeCaire was able to scream by Gilbert for the lead and then DeCaire pulled away from the field.
One official pointed out that five more laps and DeCaire's tire would have been gone. The race was cut to 20 laps due to the tire wear issue on the TBARA Sprints.
The TBARA Sprints race again Monday night at New Smyrna Speedway and will appear at DeSoto Super Speedway in Bradenton, Fl. on February 17th.
Kevin Ingram was a solid winner in the 25 lap Late Model feature easily outgunning #26 Jason Boyd and #88 Justin Larson. Ingram's two second place finishes on the first two nights of the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing gives him a solid 40 point lead AJ Curreli in the early going of the nine days of racing at New Smyrna Speedway.
The modifieds were also in action Sunday night along with the Pro Challenge Cars.
