New Asphalt Is Ready For 41st Annual World Series | BY Jane Smith
BIG SURPRISES AWAIT FANS AT NEW SMYRNA SPEEDWAY THIS WINTER
A newly paved New Smyrna Speedway is ready for the nine nights of racing as the 41st World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing draws nearer and nearer.
"Racers this year will find a faster track and what use to work probably won't this time," said General Manager Terry Roberts. He also added this, "Drivers will have to look for new setups when they come to the track and it is going to be fast."
Not only is the track new but the pits won't be dusty as asphalt was added to them also. In addition, new landscaping for the front entrance will greet the fans this year.
One of the first drivers to test out the new surface was B.J. McLeod, who had the opportunity as an instructor with the FinishLine Racing School this past Tuesday. "It is as smooth, like Lakeland and fast", B.J. said. He also indicated that when the cars get ready to race, it should be at least a half second faster for the supper late models.
McLeod is expected to run at least some of the World Series in his familiar 78 race car, along with top drivers such as Justin Drawdy of Fort Pierce, FL. who just had a stellar outing at Lakeland.
Back to back nights of TBARA Winged Sprint racing on the 10 and 11th of February should be electric for fans as the fastest race cars in the south test the new surface. There is already a huge buzz about the speeds these cars might hit.
With only nine days left until opening night of the World Series, the staff and crew are busy getting New Smyrna Speedway ready for the influx of drivers. This year's World Series will feature Super Late Models, Late Models, Crate/ASA Type Late Models, FL/IMCA "E" Modifieds, NASCAR Tour Type/SK Modifieds plus on Sunday and Monday nights, the TBARA Outlaw Winged Sprints and Pro Challenge.
The Annual Richie Evans Memorial 100, which features the NASCAR Tour Type Mods, will be Friday, February 16th. On the following Saturday night, February 17th, the Pete Orr Memorial 100 will run with Super Late Models.
Racing gets started at the newly repaved New Smyrna Speedway starting February 9th for nine straight nights of the hottest short track action in the state.
