Friday Night Sportsman 50 to honor Homer Gordon at Orlando SpeedWorld | by Jane Smith
Bithlo, Fla. (October 10, 2005) The date October 25, 2003 will long be remembered by the many friends and family of Homer Gordon. That is the date that he came to the track with his brand new Sportsman pulled by his brand new truck and proudly displaying his new firesuit. It was a happy day for Homer, one he had looked forward to for a long time.
The air was cool, the night was clear, and Homer was in his playful mood which was just Homer. He was proud to show off that new car and he was in such a hurry that night to get to the track, he forgot his racing shoes and was stuck wearing his work boots which he hated.
Everyone wished him luck in his new car as he got ready for his Sportsman heat race. The car looked good going around New Smyrna and everyone was very happy for Homer. But suddenly the car slowed as if something broke and finally ended up against the backstretch wall. Little did we know that during the final laps, it was Homer's final laps as he suffered a massive heart attack at the wheel and died.
This Friday night at SpeedWorld, October 14, the Sportsman 50 will be run in Homer Gordon's honor. Homer we still miss you and love you and we know you are watching. You will have the best seat in the house, enjoy my friend.
