REPEAT WINNERS AT EAST BAY SATURDAY NIGHT | By John Berti -Karnac.com staff writer
Gibsonton, FL -October 1, 2005- It was a great night of exciting, action packed, dirt track racing at East Bay Raceway Park Saturday night.
Eighteen cars lined up for the 25 lap Late Model feature event with Ted Erskine taking off from his outside pole starting position to lead the first three laps.
Erskine got a little high in turn four opening the bottom of the track up for Roger Crouse who took full advantage to take the lead. One lap later Erskine spun out on the frontstretch.
On lap five Jack Nosbisch, Jr. spun in turn four while running second bringing out a caution. Jeff Mathews also spun taking evasive action not to run into Nosbisch. Mathews was put back into third with Nosbisch picking up at the rear.
The next caution came out on lap seven when Chris Livernois looped the 42L car in turn two.
On the restart Bobby Alexander, Sr. got by K.D. Kelley for second.
Tim Gay and Al Larson brought the yellow out on lap nine when they spun between turns three and four.
Kelley took the runnerup spot back from Alexander on lap eleven and began to close in on Crouse.
Several laps later Kelley hit the rear of Crouse's car hard between turns one and two resulting in heavy front sheet metal damage on his 00 mount. Kelley collected the car of Donnie Tanner putting Tanner to the rear and Kelley into the pits.
As the field went back to green Marshall Austin got by Alexander for second followed by Keith Nosbisch. Alexander dropped back to fourth.
Crouse, Austin, and Keith Nosbisch pulled away from the remainder of the field with no change in the running order down to the checkers. Alexander hung on for four with David Schmauss fifth.
The win represented Crouse's fourth win of the season and second in a row.
The open-wheel modifieds had more than there fair share of problems putting the first lap of their 15 lap feature race behind them. There were three aborted starts for the twenty-two car field. The first when Brian Hollifield spun in turn two. The second when Devon Dixon and Roger Crouse crashed in turn four and the third in an incident involving Bill Howard, Dale Kelley and the 205x (driver unknown).
A mutliple car crash in turn one with just one lap completed involved Billy Boyd, Jr; Scott Williams; Greg Reutimann; Jeff Mathews and Buzzie Reutimann. Point leader Buzzie Reutimann had to pick up at the rear.
When racing action resumed Bobby Dixon, who started on the pole, continued in the top spot. He began to pull away from second place runner, Buddy Wisham, to build a good lead.
Meanwhile, Howard, David Schmauss and Buzzie Reutimann were making their way to the front The yellow came out on lap ten when Devon Dixon, second in points, spun out between turns one and two. Jason Pope brought out a second caution on the same lap.
When the field resumed racing it was still Bobby Dixon holding the top spot, but Schmauss, Howard and Reutimann were now in the top five.
Bobby Dixon continued to lead up to the last lap when Schmauss dove under him between turns one and two to take the lead. Bobby Dixon got sideways losing several positions in the process.
At the checkers it was Schmauss in for the win, his second in a row. Howard finished second with John Bradley, Buzzie Reutimann and Travis Merrill rounding out the top five.
Amidst the victory lane ceremonies Schmauss dedicated his win to his father who recently passed away.
