James DuBose Extends Sportsman Streak | By Claude Lewis
Four out of five ain't bad.
James DuBose saw his string of consecutive victories in the Sportsman divison snapped at three in June, but he righted the ship and sailed back into victory lane Saturday night at Charlotte County Speedway.
DuBose captured Saturday night's 50-lap feature at the Punta Gorda 3/8-mile paved oval, holding off Dale Dean III at the checkered.
DuBose dominated the Sportsman division in the spring but saw his victory streak come to an end in the June race. He was leading but bowed out early because of mechanical difficulties.
This time around, the "King" was back in power in his 67 car.
DuBose bulled his way to the front on lap 18. The Arcadia hotshoe had to hold off a determinbed Dean in the 19 car.
Attrition took its toll on the field as the race wore on. The most spectacular event came on lap 32 when Bubba Thompson flipped his car on the backstretch.
Gus Coorssen finished third in the 17 car. Ricky Bullard of Arcadia was fourth in the 1 car.
Local racers Chris Huntoon, Mike Holmes and Johnny Cassady also had entries but did not challenge up front.
There was plenty of other action on a night that saw racing take place deep into the night.
In Super Stocks, Chris Grubbs crossed the finish line first, comfortably ahead of runnerup Clete Trimmer and third-place Eruc Smith.
In the Thunder Trucks feature, Don van Acker smoked the field in his 33 truck. Richard DuPont took second and Wally Smith was third.
Road Warrior feature action saw Chris Hunton beat Andy Wood and Gary Miller to the stripe.
In Front Wheel Drive 4-Cylinder play, Kyle Eash was able to keep his 17 car ahead of hrad-charger Pete Amelotte. Shawn Bates was third in the 6 car.
There were several special classes racing Saturday night -- TQ Midgets, Dwarf Cars and Pro Challenge.
In The TQs, Ernie Teed had enough to defeat Bob Durfee. Jack Duffy took third, Brian Gingras captured the Dwarf Car race. Ron Towles was second and Dan Nyhan third. Rod Sanders won the Pro Challenge event wiuth Brad Sanders and Harold Brennan giving chase.
Fastrucks will return to Charlotte County Speedway this coming Saturday night.

The Fastrucks will be joined be the daring Figure 8 cars, which return to the Punta Gorda paved oval following a two-month summer break.
