Perfect weather and a full pit greeted the fans at Citrus County Speedway Saturday night and a 7 division race card provided plenty of action throughout the night. Two young Modified drivers Curtis Neumann and Dustin Chisholm were awarded $1,000 college scholarships from the Q Motorsports Student Racing Scholarship Program to top off the evening.
Lee Collins of Immokalee kicked off the evening in the Gulf Coast Modified qualifying with a fast time shutting the clock off at 14.155 seconds on the 3/8th mile oval. Ralph Bowman turned a 14.158 but was DQd on weight displacement giving Danny Partelo the outside pole at 14.178. When the green fell for the all green flag 50 lap main, Partelo won the drag race to turn one and spent 21 laps holding off numerous efforts by Collins before Lee lost it on turn 4 sending him to the rear of the pack for the restart. Partelo had no problems extending his lead over Bryan Rogers, Dustin Chisholm, and Tommy Bower in the race to the checkers. Collins managed to come back through traffic to take a fifth place finish.
Maloy Kelly doubled up with a Sportsman heat win and his first feature win of the season in a flag to flag run in their 20 lap main. Stephen Anderson spent the evening battling with Ernie Reed in the race for third while point leader Rick Kase came off his heat win to out run John Smith in the run for fifth. One restart saw Chris Cross total his race car after flipping at the starting line on a bad restart that caught everyone by surprise. Doc James Batson was pushed into the wall under the starters stand ending his night and Mike Veltman also received damage that took him out of the running.
Chris Hooker blitzed the Mini Stock field for his sixth win of the season and put some more cushion in his point lead. Rick Litka out dueled George Neumann in a tight run for second at the flag. Point runner up Mike Lawhorn salvaged a 4th place finish over Justin Larson. Heat wins went to Clint Foley who got caught up in an early race crash in the feature. Rick Litka took the win in the second heat. Thirteen Mini Stocks were making preparations for next weeks Mini Stock Challenge Race featuring the best in the state.
Twenty seven of the 30 registered Hobby Stocks took the green flag for their 20 lap main that also got pretty physical with wrecks taking out 10 racers before it was all over. Curtis Flanagan gained some more ground on point leader Bill Ryan with his 6th win of the season and second in a row. Doc Batson started 20th just in front of Flanagan and followed him through traffic for a second place finish. Johnny Zuidema moved from 10th to third over Tim Anderson and 26th starter Don Teague. Heat wins went to Tony Trancucci, Artie Hewitt and Don Teague
In a borrowed race car from the Richard Henick Racing Team Wayne Heater got back into the winners circle for his 5th Thunder Stock win after a long dry spell. Starting on the outside pole he won the race for turn one and held on for the win over a hard charging D.J. Macklin. Point leader Steve Stineduf held off Dale Smith and Louie Coie in the race for third. Heat winners were Heater, Mike Dubbs and Stineduf.
The fans saw plenty of action in the Figure 8, 20 lap main that featured 17 starters and saw 11 finish in the close intersection encounters. Robert Aaron logged his second win of the season over Charlie Meyer, last years champion Bob Hage, Wayne Calkins and John Thomas. Joey Catterelli and Dwayne Fults recovered from early spins to salvage 6th and 7th in that order. Their next race date is October 1st.
Four Cylinder Bombers saw pole sitter Rusty Adams take a heat win and his second win of the season over a short field. Point runner up Kevin Stone nailed a second place finish over Pete Nelson, Jesse Mullis and point leader Tim Herrington who crashed and was unable to finish.
Next Saturday night will feature two traveling series, the Southern Sportsmen Series and the Mini Stock Challenge with the best in Florida racing in both divisions. On the local scene, the Late Models, Hobby Stocks, Thunder Stocks and 4 Cylinder Bombers are back on the race card. September 24th will see the TBARA Winged Sprint cars in their makeup for their rain out on June 4th. On Oct 8th Citrus County Speedway will have its first Crash and Smash featuring the first ever School Bus Race and much more.
