Mini Stocks & Southern Sportsman Highlight Eagles Nest Racing Night at Bronson | Staff Report
On a hot and humid night, perfect for racing at the ASA Sanctioned Bronson Motor Speedway two traveling series hit the high banks.
It was a great double-header with the Eagle's Nest Mini Stock Championship and the stars of the Southern Sportsman Series in action along with the Bronson Racing Series.
Both of the special events were scheduled for fifty laps. There was excitement and action at every turn as both series thrilled the Bronson faithful.
Not to be out done, the Bronson regulars ran all of their feature races caution free. Qualifying began promptly at 7:30 as is the norm when special shows are in town. Heat races followed then a brief intermission and then the features. The action on the speedway was as hot as the August night.
In the Eagle's Nest Mini Stock Championship qualifying, Darren Jackson laid down the fastest time around the high banks. After the redraw, and subsequent inversion process, Jackson held onto the top spot.
Once the green flag fell, it was obvious no one would be a match for the #96. Rick Sirmans did an excellent job trying to run down the leader, although he would settle for second. Marty Neikens wound up finishing third. Thank you to the folks at Eagle's Nest Racing for their efforts to make the race possible.
If action is what the fans were craving, they certainly got their fill with the Southern Sportsman Series. The front row was made up Steve Elder and Derrick Heath, as they charged to the green mayhem ensued behind them. On the restart, almost the same thing happened as cars in the pack stacked up again.
Once the race got under way, Heath assumed the lead. He would show the way until lap 22, when he was involved in a bizarre caution. Heath and new second place runner, Craig Cuzzone made contact and collected several others. Previous race winner Patrick Thomas was also involved in the incident.
On the restart, Cuzzone held a lead that would prove to be short lived. He would fall victim to mechanical gremlins, and retire on lap 31. Richard Elkins Jr. assumed the lead and held off late charges by local driver Tommy Conquest and Aaron Williamson to take the prize.
Williamson finished second and Kyle Tenbusch recovered from an early penalty to run third. All the drivers did a wonderful job on a night that tensions were high and tempers flared.
The first of the Bronson regulars to take to the track was the Pure Stock division. It seemed the Sportsman Series used up all the cautions as this division's drivers ran wire to wire caution free. In a race that was close but clean, A.J. Northup led all 20 laps to pick up another win. He was followed closely to the line by Bobby Johnson and Richie Smith.
Not to be outdone, the Thunder Stock division took to the starting grid. The front row was all "Bent Wrench Racing" with Charlie Kennedy leading the field to the green. He led the first five laps until Randy O'Neal and Willard Driggers muscled their way by. In the closing laps, O'Neal was able to outlast Driggers to the finish.
In Harvey Wallbangers, Josh Lynch was able to hold off hard-charging Lisa Luke to pick up his first win.
