Wayne Anderson Scores AACS Super Late Model Win At Desoto | By John Berti -KARNAC.com
Bradenton, FL - August 6, 2005 - Ominus black clouds skirted the skies all around Desoto Super Speedway, but none materialized to dampen the racing action at the "South's Fastest Short Track".
The Super Late Models were the marquis division on a night which would see the Florida Mini Stock Challenge Series, Open-wheel Modifieds, and several other support divisions in competition.
Qualifying for the AACS Super Late Models was accomplished through time trials. Twenty competitors went under the clock with current point leader, Wayne Anderson, coming away with the fastest time at 14:63 seconds. The roll of the di came up with #2 inverting the first two rows for the start of the 125 lap grind.
It was Mike Bresnahan and Billy Bigly, Jr. bringing the field around for the start. Bigly was substitute driving for Sean LeMaster, the regular driver of the #8 car, who was on his honeymoon.
Bresnahan jumped out to the early lead holding it through the first three laps.
Wayne Anderson dove under Bresnahan going into turn one and came out of turn two with the top spot on lap 4. Jeff Scofield was also able to get by Bresnahan for second before Bresnahan could settle back into line for third.
Wayne Anderson and Scofield showed they were the class of the field as they consistently were able to pull away from the rest of the field despite several cautions.
Bigly got by Bresnahan for third on lap 36 with Mario Gosselin slipping by Wayne Jefferson on 48 to move into the top five.
At the 50 lap mark the top ten running order was Wayne Anderson, Scofield, Bigly, Bresnahan, Gosselin, Jefferson, Steve Dorer, Jeff Choquette, Scot Walters and Mike Williams.
On lap 96 Williams spun out while running 9th. Dorer and Choquette both passed Jefferson who was beginning to fade.
With 100 laps in the books it was still Wayne Andeson showing the way with about a four car length lead over Scofield who in turn was trailed by Bigly, Bresnahan, Gosselin, Dorer Choquette, Walters, Jeff Sloan and Jefferson.
Gosselin made a slingshot move under Bresnahan in turn 4 to move up to fourth on lap 112. Bresnahan got hung up in the high groove losing further positions to Dorer, Choquette, Walters and Sloan.
Scofield made one last run closing right up to Wayne Anderson's back bumper with just 10 laps to go, but Wayne pushed down harder on the gas pedal to build his lead back up to four or so car lengths and kept that margin to the checkers.
In his victory lane interview Anderson said, "That was the hardest 125 lapper I ever ran. That 07 car (Scofield) was always there. I was afraid of getting a shot from him."
Wayne Anderson's win enabled him to put a little more distance between himself and defending champion, Scofield, in the point standings. Wayne Anderson now has 1010 points compared to 919 points for Scofield. Rounding out the top five are: Bresnahan, 900; Sloan, 870, and Dorer, 847.
