Truck Wars Escalates To Prime Time Internet Radio | KARNAC STAFF REPORT
Florida Race Fans In For A Real Treat This Thursday This coming Thursday evening at 7pm, race fans will get a glimpse of the real story behind the continuing truck racing controversy. The message boards have been overrun by postings, ranting and confusion over the FASTRUCK/FASCAR battle for supremacy on Florida's Short Tracks.
FASTRUCK Promoter Bobby Diehl and FASCAR General Manager Don Nerone will square off in the studios of KGKI Radio (KGKIRadio.com) for a two hour question and answer session with hosts Jack Smith and Bill Green. Green and Smith co-host the new Internet Radio talk show "From Behind the Mic", which airs each Thursday from 7pm to 9pm.
This newest entry into the Florida racing media scene, while under development for six months began it weekly offerings to race fans this past Thursday with 14 guests in two hours and 15 minutes. The participants ranged from stock cars to drag racing and sprint car racing and from several states including New York. TBARA's flamboyant flagman known as "Wild Child" talked about the exciting sprint car series, while North Carolinian Skip Wall, the host of KARNAC.com's ProCup Report briefed fans on the involvement of "Little E, Tony Stewart, Jimmy Spencer, Rusty Wallace and other big NASCAR names into the Hooters ProCup racing series. Several hundred listeners tuned in to the maiden show. "We will begin the real promotion cycle this week", said Jack Smith, publisher of KARNAC.com. "We need to get some bugs ironed out and get comfortable with the equipment."
The studio is state of the art for Internet Radio, and is set up for music based shows as well as talk radio. Last week the guitar legend for the Allman Brothers Band, Dickey Betts performed for three thousand fans and then took calls from the national audience. More racing shows and other types of talk shows are planned for the station in the future.
But the flagship of the fleet is the "From Behind the Mic" team of Jack Smith and Bill Green, both veteran media and publicity types, and this coming week's show with Don Nerone and Bobby Diehl is expected to garner a huge audience.
The FASTRUCKS promoter has been at odds with the folks at FASCAR since late last year when the decision was made by FASCAR to start their own Pro Trucks Series to compete directly against the established truck series operated by Diehl. A search of KARNAC articles from last year and this and a look at the message board posts over the last several months will give any fan a good background into the situation.
But Thursday night the past, present and future of truck racing will be discussed and probably hotly debated by the these two promoters. Don Nerone has been in the business of race track and series promotion for over 35 years and oversees the FASCAR Operation of three tracks and four traveling series.
Bob Diehl is a school teacher in the Tampa area and has been operating the FASTRUCK racing series for over five years. He has been one of the state's most vocal and creative promoters during that time.
