Thursday, December 27, 2001 | | Winter Spectacular II Paying $5,000 To Win | Winter Spectacular II Race Course Being Reconfigured
By Larry MacMillan
Promoters Billy Hooker and Jimmy Wear announced that they were increasing the payoff for the January 19th Winter Spectacular II, with the winner taking home $5,000.00 and runner up picking up $2,200.00. See the complete payoff attached. Bonuses remain intact.
Race drivers who felt they had learned their way around the new banking and pavement during Citrus County Speedways Winter Spectacular I, will have some more lessons to be learned for Winter Spectacular II scheduled to run on Saturday, January 19th, 2002. It will be a whole new configuration that will probably add 10 to 20 miles an hour to speeds down the back straight for the Late Models.
Work will be completed during the holidays, adding another 20 feet to the width of the back stretch of the track and just about making a D shape and making the speedway a 3/8 mile racetrack . The back wall is being moved, necessitating the pit grandstands to be moved or replaced. New pavement will be added to the extra 20-foot back stretch making for wider turns off turn two and going into turn three. With new banking on the turns it is suspected that cars will go through one and two and right on into turn three at full throttle.
Winter Spectacular II will not only have a new playing field but bonuses for all drivers who participated in the December race, in all divisions. Added to the Late Model 100 will be a $1000 bonus to the winner if he finished in the top five for the first race, $500 to the winner if they finished sixth through tenth and $250 to the winner if they finished 11th through 15th. The Goodyear tire will be mandatory for the Late Models and will be available to the Sportsman, Street Stocks and Mini Stocks but not mandatory for Winter Spectacular II thirty lap feature races.
The 2002 season will kick off on February 9th and Citrus County Speedway will have a whole new look from both the drivers and the fans point of view. There are also plans to build 16 skyboxes on top of the pit grandstands that will be available to interested corporate race fans to rent or buy.
Purses are up, car counts have been outstanding and the quality of racing certainly is expected to be even better. With the new configuration of the track, speeds will be picking up and there should be plenty of passing, with two and three lane racing. The schedule has a total of 38 races featuring Late Model, Sportsman, Street Stock, Mini Stock, Hobby Stock and Thunder Stock Heat and feature action every week. Figure 8s will run a limited schedule with specials to be added throughout the season.
Be sure to put Winter Spectacular II on you racing schedule. There will be a practice, testing and tuning session on Friday night January 18th. Security will be available to leave your race rigs in the pits overnight. Have an opinion on this story? Post a message on our Message Board! <news@karnac.org>or send a letter to the editor!
