GARVEY OUTLASTS MILLER IN ASA FLORIDA 200 | by Thom Watson LAKELAND, FL - Mike Garvey outlasted pole sitter, Butch Miller, to take the ASA Florida 200 at USA International Speedway in Lakeland Saturday night. Garvey took the lead on lap 167 when leader Gary St. Amant and Kevin Cywinski tangled in turn one. Butch Miller stayed on Garvey's tail for the remaining laps, but could not pull out the victory. The first two starters, Garvey and Miller, took the green flag and raced door handle-to-door handle for the first two laps, with Miller finally taking over the lead and leading for the next 93 laps. At times he was able to stretch the lead to 7 car lengths under the long green run.
St. Amant was able to take the lead on lap 95 as he passed Miller on the backstretch. ASA officials decided to throw a competition yellow on lap 100, as the race was green up until that point. The leaders elected to take pit stops, and Garvey was the big winner as he went in fifth and was able to get out in third, thanks to a great pit stop.
On lap 117, the top five of St. Amant, Miller, Garvey, Toby Porter and Cywinski were nose-to-tail and had pulled out to a four-car length lead over the rest of the field. It stayed that way, with Miller catching St. Amant in the turns, but lacked the horsepower to keep up on the long straight-aways.
On lap 167, leader St. Amant along with Cywinski and two lapped cars tangled in turn one and were out of the running for the win. Garvey took over the lead, with Miller in second. Garvey went on to take the checkers. Miller, Porter, Joey Clanton and Scott Fraser rounded out the top five.
In the 50-lap consolation race, for the Florida 200 race, Ryan Hemphill started in the pole position and led the entire race to grab the 23rd starting position for Saturday’s ASA race at USA International Speedway. In a race where staying in line was the rule and passing was the exception, David Elliott was able to pass two cars in the last two laps and take the final transfer spot. The top 12 finishers were able to automatically transfer into the main event. The top five starters, Hemphill, Ricky Carlton, Matt Sieisky, Doug Stevens, and Travis Kittleson stayed that way the entire 50 laps. Homosassa Springs’, Ricky Carlton was able to stay with Hemphill on restarts, but would fade on long green flag runs. On the final lap, the #60 car of Ed Brown, lost control and hit the turn one wall hard. While Brown was able to walk away, his car’s front end was badly damaged. Earlier in the evening, qualifying took place and ASA veteran Butch Miller took the pole position for the ASA Florida 200, with a lap 21.090 seconds, 128.023 miles per hour. Forty-six drivers took qualifying runs for the 38-car field.
