Salute to Racing 2001 A Big Success | The Annual Salute to Racing show was held at the Sarasota Fairgrounds this weekend with over 10,000 motorsports fans in attendance. Saturday's big attraction was Cale Yarborough and Sunday featured the auction to benefit St. Jude's Children's Hospital. DeSoto Speedway, Charlotte County Speedway, East Bay Raceway, Daytona Antique Auto Racing Association, Racing For Kids Club, Track Rescue, Short Track USA, Allison Legacy Series, 911 Racing Series, Florida Mini-Stock Challenge Series, T.B.A.R.A. were some of the organizations represented from the Florida stock car scene.
Salute to Racing 2001 brought out the fans and racers from their winter hibernation and the weather was great. There were all forms of racing machines on hand from the big wheeled Swamp Buggy's to the 1946 quarter midgets. There was something for everyone who enjoys motorsports. Also the custom car show had some of fine looking machines all waxed up and ready.
For the actual racing fix there were go-kart races, after qualifying and heat races the winners got to take on three time NASCAR champion Cale Yarborough. Rick Anges was edged out in the heat race by Tampa Bay's top morning show host "Bubba the Love Sponge" who won the event in what some called a 'hopped up kart'.
"Wild Man" Sky Lungston made some high flying jumps during the 2 day event to the delight of all the fans, and throughout both days activities the Monster Trucks were providing rides for the kids. The hit of the auction was the autographed Bobby Labonte driver's suit. Bill Green form Short Track USA kept the crowd entertained during Sunday afternoon, and interviewed fans in the audience.
