SOUTHERN THUNDER HOSTS TRICK OR TREAT THE DRIVERS

By Robin Smith Miller

GhoulsOn the first chilly race night of the fall season, the annual tradition of Trick or Treat the Drivers at Charlotte County Speedway took place on Saturday, October 27. Hundreds of children waited for the front gate to open so that they could get treats from their favorite drivers.

It is difficult to say who enjoys the event more, the children or the drivers. The Tampa Bay Area Racing Association and Outlaw Modified series enjoy the occasion so much that they make special requests well in advance each year to race at the Speedway on the weekend preceding Halloween. This year, the pure stock, road warrior and mini stock divisions also had the opportunity to participate.

HALLOWEEN SLIDE SHOW

The Charlotte County Speedway Junior Fan Club, under the direction of Sara Carmean, sponsors the event each year that includes a costume contest, face painting and a coffin full of treats for all the race fans.

Also, on the card for this year's special night was the World Strongest Man, John Wooten, who pulled a semi-truck one hundred feet down the front stretch by himself. In addition, "The Amazing Gonzales" astounded the crowd by having a concrete block broken over his head by a sledgehammer.

The new owners and management of Southern Thunder are earnestly trying to provide more entertainment for the fans of Charlotte County Speedway. In an effort to provide more outlets for the young people visiting the Speedway, they have opened a video arcade. They recently had motor cycle dare devil Sky Lungston perform during their intermission and look forward to hosting the third segment of the prestigious Triple Crown Super Late Model race on Sunday, November 4.

Look for even more positive changes in the next few months.
