Thursday, October 25, 2001 | | Citrus Action Heats Up - Two Special Races Announced | by Larry MacMillan
Its kids night at Citrus County Speedway this weekend with the celebration of Halloween featuring a costume contest for three age groups and the drivers providing the goodies for Trick or Treat on the front straight during intermission. Race drivers continue to scramble for good starting positions and even better finishes in their quest to win division titles or gain their rightful spot in the top ten.
Herb Neumann Jr. had his worst finish of the season last week and is now looking in his rear view mirror at Bill Bechtelheimer. Billy moved up to second in the race for the crown with a solid second place finish last week. Dale Sanders had a DNF from an early wreck, slipping to third in the point race. Danny Johnson has a solid hold on fourth with Perry Lovelady chasing him. Late Models are back in action in heats and a 30-lap feature.
Mike Veltman continues to have great finishes and pretty well has his third consecutive Sportsman title in the bag. Rex Struble picked up the heat win and his 6th feature win of the season last week, earning him enough points to go into a tie with Chris Hooker in the race for second. Johnny Sanders needs three more decent finishes to hang onto fourth over Mark Dominique and Alan Struble.
Travis Nichols has his work cut out for him to hold onto the Street Stock lead. He continues to finish just ahead of his closest contenders, Ernie Reed and Mike Bell, picking up a few more points every week. Victor Stanley and Dean Lawyer are till in the hunt with 85 points separating the top five.
Frank Coleman had his brother Rick pinch hitting for him last week after his racer lost power in warm ups. Rick won his heat and took a third place finish in the feature to add some more cushion to Franks lead. Mark Sowell lost four points to Coleman in the run for the crown but has a solid hold on second over Don Faunce, Mike Moore and Rob Wheatley.
Its all over but the shouting for the Hobby Stock crown. Richie Smith continues to finish well, sporting 11 feature wins, nine top five and 4 top ten finishes and 9 heat wins for the best overall record for all divisions. J.D. Goff moved around Roy Perkins in the race for second after his second place finish. Perkins will attest that those DNFs will hurt you. Fourth runner, Brandon Johnson made it two wins in a row and will be going for the Three in a row bonus this week. Eric Sharrone has the rest of the pack chasing him for fifth.
Winless Stuart Madison goes into the final three weeks of the season with a very comfortable point lead for the Thunder Stock Crown. Allen Turner continues to hold off Rick Badessa in the race for second. Gary Johnson and John Donahue continue their battle for fourth.
Figure 8s have the week off but will be back to wrap up their season next week. Joe Gill Represents the Citrus County Sheriffs Department in this weeks final run for the 911 Emergency Racers. Fifteen of these dressed out emergency racers power up in heat and feature action this weekend and will have sirens and emergency lights on in a high-speed pursuit on the quarter mile oval.
